Throughout the history of public art, traditionally marginalized artists have been relegated to presenting work that emphasizes their “otherness” in relation to an unquestioned norm – a relationship defined by and in the interest of maintaining the dominant culture. Quota is a pop-up venue that invites artists to be artists in their own right, self-defined, and free of monolithic expectations around their identity and creative vision.
The changing demographics of urban centers, specifically in our nation’s capital, have influenced a number of spaces towards commercial use – where art is often just a backdrop at a social event. This has resulted in fewer cultural spaces, with less diversity in gender, race, class and sexual identity. By providing artists with venues for pop-up exhibitions, events, and community support, our goal is to increase their visibility and introduce more diversity into the current public discourse around the arts more broadly.
